CodeCheck.com
The information contained here was developed by an Oakland, CA building inspector who converted years of on-the-job notes about code violations into book form, and replicated the book’s text and drawings on the Web. It’s designed to explain the fundamental public safety issues that are inherent in complex building code regulations. While the site’s information does not satisfy the requirements of every municipality or individual inspector, it does reflect many of the principles that underlie building codes throughout the United States. Along with diagrams and information about building, plumbing, mechanical/HVAC and electrical codes, the site includes links to dozens of the nation’s premiere building/construction organizations and institutes such as the National Association of Home Builders, Council of American Building Officials, National Institute of Standards and Technology, and Underwriters Laboratory.

Decoding Building Codes
Designed for non-professionals (interested homeowners, project novices and do-it-yourselfers), this article on the University of Massachusetts’ Building Materials and Wood Technology Web site provides a general overview about building codes. It explains what codes are, the steps involved in a construction project from getting permits to working with inspectors, and things to watch for to ensure everything goes smoothly. It’s a great resource for people who need to quickly and simply educate themselves about dealing with building codes.
