The information contained here was developed by an Oakland, CA building
inspector who converted years of on-the-job notes about code violations
into book form, and replicated the book’s text and drawings on the Web.
It’s designed to explain the fundamental public safety issues that are
inherent in complex building code regulations. While the site’s information
does not satisfy the requirements of every municipality or individual
inspector, it does reflect many of the principles that underlie building
codes throughout the United States. Along with diagrams and information
