Q: How important is proper maintenance to safety?
A: As with any tool, proper routine maintenance is important for safe and efficient use of pneumatic nailers and staplers.

Regular oiling, if required, daily tightening of cap screws and ensuring proper movement of the safety element and trigger are extremely important for safe use.

NEVER attempt to repair a cracked or broken part, such as attempting to weld the fracture or break. This could result in a part which will no longer operate as designed, and place the user and others at risk. Refrain from such attempted repairs. It is not worth the risk!

Q: Should I pay attention to the warning labels on the tools?
A: All SENCO nailers and staplers are shipped from the factory with DANGER labels already on the tool. These labels contain a series of basic, yet extremely important safety messages for the user and bystander. Regardless of how well these labels are attached, or how scratch-resistant or wear-resistant they may be, it is possible that, in time, the wording may become illegible with normal use. Whenever you are repairing the tool, performing routine maintenance, or have the opportunity to inspect the tool, make sure the label is readable. If it is not, replace the label with an adhesive version that is available at no charge by calling the SENCO Action Line (1-800-543-4596)

Q: Why should I use SENCO fasteners when there are others available?
A: As you know, SENCO nails and staples are designed and manufactured specifically for use with SENCO tools. While non-SENCO nails and staples can be used in SENCO tools, there is no guarantee that the end-user will not experience performance issues. These issues could range from premature wear of parts to injury to the end-user and/or bystanders. That’s why in our written and oral communication with you we continually reference the importance of using only SENCO fasteners in SENCO tools.

Q: Can I use any type of air or gas to run my pneumatic tools?
A: SENCO pneumatic tools are designed to be used only with clean, dry, regulated, compressor air. You should never use any bottled gas, such as oxygen or carbon dioxide, as a power source for pneumatic tools. Such practice will cause the tool to literally explode, causing serious injury or death to the user and bystanders. Please pass this message along to your customers and encourage them to read and heed all warnings and instructions, and to think safety first.

Q: When should I disconnect the tool from the compressor?
A: Be safe. Always disconnect tool from the air supply before:
  • Handing the tool to another person
  • Leaving work area
  • Moving tool to another location
  • Cleaning a jammed fastener
  • Doing tool maintenance
  • When not is use
Always practice safety first and remind your customers to do the same.

Q: Which trigger system should I use for my application?
A: For applications where high production work is desired (such as decking, siding, sheathing etc.), Dual Action trigger systems are preferred. For applications where precision staple or nail placement is desired, (finish and trim, hobbywork, etc.), Restrictive Trigger systems are preferred. Safety Note: All trigger systems are safe if used in accordance with all warnings, instructions and safe workplace practices. Restrictive Trigger tools may reduce the possibility of injury to you or others in the area. For a productivity and safety analysis of SENCO's trigger systems- click here

Q: What's the difference between “Dual Action” and “Restrictive Trigger”?
A: SENCO offers two basic types of triggers for most tool models, Dual Action and Restrictive Trigger. It is important that you to understand the differences between the two triggers in order to help you understand how each operates. Applications for each trigger and the methods of operating them are as follows:

Methods of Operating a Dual Action Tool
Dual Action Trigger (also called Bottom Fire/Trigger Fire) is for applications where high production work is desired. Bottom Fire Method: This method of operation is sometimes called bounce firing. You must keep the trigger pulled while moving the tool along the work surface with a bouncing motion, depressing the safety element where you want to drive a nail or staple. Trigger Fire Method: First depress the safety element where you want to drive a nail or staple, then pull the trigger. See SAFETY NOTE below regarding "rebound." more

Methods of Operating a Restrictive Trigger Tool (also called “sequential fire”) Restrictive Trigger: (also called Trigger Fire) is for applications where precision nail or staple placement is desired. You must first depress the safety element where you want to drive a nail or staple, and then pull the trigger. After each nail or staple is driven, completely release the trigger and lift the tool off the work surface.

SAFETY NOTE:
Both types of triggers are safe if used as described above and according to all warnings and instructions. A Restrictive Trigger tool may reduce the possibility of injury to you or others in the area. This is because it is less likely to drive an unwanted nail or staple if you keep the trigger pulled and accidentally bump the safety element against yourself or others. Also, these tools will “rebound” or bounce when driving a nail or staple. Rebound can cause the user to drive an unwanted nail or staple (double fire). Double fire will occur if the safety element is unintentionally allowed to recontact the work surface or anything else (e.g., your body) with the trigger pulled. A Restrictive Trigger tool will reduce the possibility of double fire and may reduce the speed of operation compared to a Dual Action Trigger tool. Refer to the Customer Satisfaction and Safety Reminder for more detailed information or call Customer Service at 1-800-543-4596.

Q: Should I wear safety glasses while working?
A: SENCO tests show that OSHA required Z87 safety glasses will deflect a 3-1/4" nail fired at 120 psi point-blank into the lens from only six inches away. To prevent eye injuries, always wear OSHA required Z87 safety glasses with permanently attached rigid, hard plastic side shields when using SENCO pneumatic tools or other equipment. The glasses must have Z87 printed or stamped on them. SENCO offers these glasses in clear lenses (#PC0632) or tinted lenses (#PC0633). Insist that everyone in your work area wear them. In addition, help your customers protect themselves and their workers from needless eye injuries by recommending, stocking and displaying Z87 safety glasses.

Q: How should I carry the tool?
A: SENCO wants to remind you to never carry the tool with their finger under or on the trigger. If the user does not intend to drive a fastener, the tool should not be held with the finger in such a position. The reason, of course, is to prevent accidents since the tool will fire if the trigger is pulled and the safety is bumped with sufficient force. Please practice safety first, and remind your customers to do the same.

Q: Why should I read the Operating Instructions Manual and the Safety Instruction Manual?
A: As a SENCO user, you are aware important users manuals are included with each tool shipped from our factory. These manuals contain important sections relative to user safety, tool use, tool maintenance, etc. Therefore, make sure that these manuals are always included with the sale or rental of each tool. It’s a good idea to ask for extra copies for other tool users. Many times, the tool purchaser is one of a number of individuals who will have access to the tool. It is a good idea to have an inventory of all SENCO Manuals. Extra copies, free of charge, are available by calling 1-800-543-4596 and requesting the Manager, Product Safety.
